The Jargon File - The Jargon File - Part of The Internet's early history, the Jargon File is a glossary, a hand-book, a slang dictionary and a good read! Quote: "This document is a collection of slang terms used by various subcultures of computer h*ck*rs. Though some technical material is included for background and flavor, it is not a technical dictionary; what we describe here is the language h*ck*rs use among themselves for fun, social communication, and technical debate." The Jargon File was written at a time when "h*ck*r" meant someone who could dis-assemble computer code and actually enjoyed the challenge of getting behind the scenes of software and computer networks. I have put The Jargon File online at MKJA.COM to preserve and protect this part of the Internet's History.
The Jargon File - I've been asked why I have asterisked out letters from words such as "h*ck*r? Well, the answer is that it is to stop this page being banned from some search engines. Although the Jargon File is now many years old and is really just an historical document, it does address h*ack*r culture and its' subcultures. If you are a webmaster / webmistress yourself you need to consider these kind of issues. The wrong word in an article or on your page, even if used in the most innocent context, could get your page blacklisted from some search engines and directories.
